Truth About Trust

Start with transparency, no matter the painful truth. It's best to approach from a position of clarity; however, Erik Erikson defines the first stage of psychosocial development as the area in which we develop our understanding of trust versus mistrust. This becomes the basis of our understanding of our relational environment, because, as Dick Schwartz later defines, it is the psychosocial environment in which we develop relational understanding within ourselves and the environment around us.

I extend this in my own research into organizations as systems, and what I first teach in my consulting is building healthy trust in the organization. Sometimes, this is difficult from the leadership perspective because so many things have moved around and some of them may have damaged trust, but refusing to acknowledge it properly is not the same thing as repairing trust. Building something that looks and operates completely differently out of comfort is not the same thing as repairing trust.

Why am I telling you all of this?

Because, well, many of you know I have been operating as the Chief Operations Officer for my mom's nonprofit, Darryl's Corner Society. We are a trauma-informed, mutual aid partner located in greater Wilmington, Delaware. The mission comes from turning a family's trauma into endless, energy-draining stories that do nothing in the way of building community information so that no one has to suffer without grace.

The ASK:

I will be straightforward from this point forward because this really may feel like a setup. Building trust is so important to me that I recognize the easiest way to learn is through observation.

Yesterday I launched an initiative I have felt deeply in my soul has been needed for a very long time. As someone who grew up relying quite heavily on the generosity of others, I understand how uncomfortable it is to ask for a handout. So when someone promises what looks to be a hand up, you reach out for it.

You picturing it? Imagine the disappointment felt by hundreds of thousands of kids across the country at school time showing up to that back-to-school drive, just a little too late.

That's why I'm asking my community to show up as a community to help a community. I've done the math. For less than $20, we can support these kids who may have been missed because the congressional generosity just ran out. Those kids who were never meant to be left out, but simply weren't accounted for.

For that reason, all of my books are priced so a portion of the proceeds go DIRECTLY to building bookbags.
