True Colours

from the perspective of a synaesthete

By Lucy GibbonsPublished 5 years ago 1 min read
Colour, is there more than meets the eye?

Colours are an experience of delight for the eyes,

But also ears, nose, tongue and skin

Impressions are deeply touching on an emotional level

Poignant, passionate and affecting.

Muted browns and greys of the grazing cows

Amongst the verdant pasture as pass, an involuntary smile is on my lips

And a sensation of warmth and fullness

Unfolding in my chest.

Iridescent, jewel-beetle colours that swirl and dip and sparkle joyfully

Across the organically sculpted surfaces of new cars

Exploding like popping candy in my mouth until I have to turn away

Too much to contain for the moment.

Golden light gleaming on the polished golden curves of a French horn

The pleasurable tingle down the spine when I see

The additional colourwashes of royal purple with zings of phosphorescence

When a note is played.

Fresh green unfurling like the fragile new leaves of a grape vine

Flooding gently over my unfocussed vision

At the sound of a loved one's voice on the phone each day

My name is safe in his mouth.

The comforting familiar scent of my mother,

Warm and blue, with dove-grey overtones

Caring and accepting, supportive and understanding are in her arms

Filling me up to bursting point.

Subtle apricot perfume spray

Combining scent with the sensation of downy skin touching my lips

And the rainbow shimmer of sun-kissed water droplets to my field of view

Lifting my spirits and warming my soul.

That singular mocha-colour people choose to paint their walls

That mimics the aroma of a coffee shop when I see it

With an acrid burning sensation in my nasal passages

And an instant headache.

The familiar voice of a friend that brings a comforting orange tinged glow

The sweet, juicy taste sensation of finely grated carrot

And a tender texture in my mouth

Like her gentle teasing.

The sections in the second movement of Beethoven’s fifth symphony

That bring pink, mauve, burgundy and purple translucent swirls

Wildberry flavours and silky-smooth sensations to my fingertips

As I immerse myself in the music of colours.
