We All Walk Home

By Casey PitmanPublished 5 years ago • 2 min read

A dream.

A fantasy.

A forgotten memory

That longingly aches

To be pulled, yet again,

To the forefront of time.

Wandering streets.

Stuffy motel rooms.

Shuffling feet

Against the cobbles and grime.

Ever far the distance.

Ever desolate the wait.

Timeless isolation

In the absence of.

To be wished for.

To be traveled to,

Yet sometimes to never be known.

These are home in a general human experience.

Nature plays a different song.

To the sparrow,

Home is a tree, a bush, a clogged gutter.

To the muskrat,

The muddy banks of a pond.

For the mule deer,

A grove of blue spruce.

And to the eagle,

A nest of remnants

Set high atop a rocky cliff.

To the feather,

A wing.

To the leaf,

A branch.

To the beach,

A shore.

To the cloud,

A sky.

To the lonely,

A friend.

To the child,

A book,

A melody,

An adventure.

To the rain,

A puddle.

To the sound,

An ear.

To lightning,

Thunder.

To compassion,

A heart.

To hope,

A need.

To supper,

A weary pilgrim.

To fire,

The flame.

To water,

The spring, the cloud, the rain.

To life, the well of eternity.

To the race,

A track.

To the pack,

A back.

To equivalency,

An algebraic equation.

To Divinity,

Spirit.

To captivity,

A prisoner.

To trauma,

Transmutation.

The turtle,

The clam,

And the snail,

Even insects and sometimes humans, as well,

Find home in various arrays of a common shell.

To honey,

Home is a comb.

To the bee,

It's his hive.

To air,

A bubble

A word

A wind.

For the drum,

Home's a beat.

To the heart,

Home is a rhythm

An aroma

A song

A companion.

To the weak,

It's a hero.

To the lost,

A friendship.

To the story,

There's another chance at its telling.

To justice,

Home is truth.

To experience,

Mistakes.

To growth,

The discontent.

To failure,

Home is in the past.

To money,

In a bank.

To power,

Home lies in the present moment.

To a smile,

The eye.

To the frown,

A smile.

To a rescue,

The extra mile.

To freedom,

Home is grace.

To grace,

Home is forgiveness.

To a family,

Home is love.

To love,

Home is family.

To the redeemed,

Home is a state of mind.

The question remains:

Is home an origin or a destination?

The only home for strength is God.
