Treasured Memories

Those unexpected gifts

A whim, a whisper, intuition at play,

The whoosh of tyres on life’s highway,

A tune as old as a sophisticated adage,

Another chapter, a licked finger, a turning of page.

**

A skittish footstep under tread,

Hastened from the comfort of bed,

Doubts, fears, a beating heart,

An uplifting smile — a wonderful start.

**

The noise a necessary evil, a ward from the cold,

Surprisingly courageous, even a tad bold,

Heartstrings connected, invisible to the naked eye,

A flow of simplicity, an unanswered question, a hollowed ‘but why’?

**

The waves slammed the undercarriage, while words flew,

The meaning, the possibilities, second by second grew,

The blacktop reached out a hand and a silent invite,

An opportunity to make memories, maybe just for a night.

**

No matter what, the world continues to turn,

Isn’t it human nature lined with optimism; to hope, to yearn?

Effortlessly the day moves forward, blissfully shared,

A stretch of gravel, distant sand dunes where windy waves fared.

**

Nourishment spread as secrets told,

The night grows darker and lives gently unfold,

An empathic ear listens and understands,

Under the full moon surrounded by colourful bands.

**

Steps whisper into mysterious nooks and crannies, to sheer delight,

While everything that transpires feels exactly right,

Toes dig deeper undulating in the softest sands,

And miles are shortened by the gentlest of hands.

**

The last hug a teleportal of instantaneous landing,

The moisture in the clouds, legs left standing,

The noise disappears, quietude reigns,

A soul connection; life once known — now forever changed.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
