Toast bread and water? That's prisoner food

Oh but toast bread and water tastes so mighty good

right after class when the school bell would ring

kids ran out to see what the snack van would bring

dollars in hands from their moms and their dads

bought noodles and goods from the manapua man

we never had money, so my sibs and I fled

to get food from our grandma and grandpa's instead

Toast bread and water? That's prisoner food

Oh but toast bread and water tastes so mighty good

at our grandparents house we would knock, wash our feet

say hui, kiss hi, off to their kitchen to eat

stand in line for the toaster with three or eight pieces

smear butter, grab water, and then stuff our faces

as an afterschool snack nothing else would suffice

warm bread and ice water just hit the spot right

Toast bread and water? That's prisoner food

But, man

Toast bread and water tastes soooo mighty good

I love toast but my brain is struggling with the idea of having it with water. I'm so used to having it with coffee, lol. Loved your poem!
