Here they come,

My eyes have that electrified glow,

My face softens, even they know

I rush them with my love and high energy,

I get a brief hug, and the cliche greeting,

With that awkward fill in the blank, awfully coy

Am I just filled with too much joy?

When the invitation gets extended,

I say I’ll go, and they hope that I don’t

We all know that I know, but I still attend,

Spry with never ending hope.

“Hey glad you came!” Then they turn away

I let them go because even I know,

You can’t hold onto someone who always lets go.

Are you in for the ride, or dipping out when things go awry?

I’d stand for you, I’d bleed for you, I’d even die for you…

I give and I give and I give,

But when I am in need, I try to be strong,

I’m left empty…

That’s when I hike to the nearest gas station,

This gas can of disappointment I’m refilling,

Call it optimism…

I’ll move on to the next,

I don’t fill voids only to be swiped left…

I know someone needs that friend like me,

And when I’m gone you’re going to miss me…

Because if I can’t trust you like you trust me,

You’re nothing but dead to me.

Friend to acquaintance that’s all you’ll be

Because you have to give all of you, to get all of me.
