Hades, god of the dead, himself alive

Yearned for Persephone's tender embrace

Her mother, Demeter, made green crops thrive

Their union she could not bless with glad grace

Breaching the breathing world to steal beauty

Hades left Demeter wild and bereft

To make crops grow, she felt no more duty

To starve in darkness, all mortals were left

Famished mouths utter few songs or prayers

Wasted limbs cannot offer sacrifice

Olympus' bright host, dismayed, sought answers:

A bargain was struck, with their sage advice

For three seasons, Persephone was free

In winter, with her dark prince she would be
