TIME AND AGAIN
For Charlene
~~~
The years have taken us apart;
Our lives went in different ways.
I know someday we’ll meet again.
I sit and count the days.
~~~
From silly girls to wide-eyed-teens,
We shared so many things.
From broken hearts to grownup loves
And finally, wedding rings.
~~~
While yours took you far away,
Mine kept me close to home.
We settled down, both had kids,
But all you did was roam.
~~~
The day you moved away from home
You told me, “have no fear –
If ever you should need a friend
Remember, I’m still here.”
~~~
I’d send card; you’d write a note,
And one of us would call.
The distance didn’t matter much,
Time mattered not at all.
~~~
Years passed; things changed and once again
I called to say hello.
You heard the sadness in my voice
Like many years ago.
~~~
We sat and talked for quite a time;
You always had a way
Of clearing up a dreary world
And brightening up my day.’’
~~~
And here we are now, passed our prime,
With silver in our hair,
It’s nice to hear your voice again,
And to know that you still care.
