In a world full of gilded lilies

I am a thistle

wild,

flowering,

herbaceous,

sometimes spiny.

I will not trim myself down for you

just because

you prefer the softness of a rose

to a wildflower.

You cannot cage

what does not belong

in a vase next to the trophy case.

My ancestors were one with the rivers

and the wolves.

They beat their own drums

and passed the torch

down

to me.

I will wear my lavender crown with pride

and declare myself

the long lost queen

of the

wild

untamed

things.
