THEY WILL HAVE THE DRESS
She Lights Up the Night, Just as I Promised
They talked about the colors, the lace, and tulle. High heels with thin straps that glittered.
Their lashes, hair, makeup, and fingernails, too. Never once did I join their conversation, nor did I consider those things myself. When it came to my wedding, it was much the same. My dress borrowed, a Sunday’s best, but for a wedding, it was basic, even for a guest. It wasn’t made for a bride; it was made for me. I never dreamt of better, it just wasn’t for me. I was no Cinderella, not even for one night.
Now I have daughters, and "THEY WILL HAVE THE DRESS." Mama makes sure the girls have the best. Long flowing dresses of dark green and gold. Delicate beadwork, silk shimmering folds, covered in sequins that flash in the night, their hoco dresses perfect, made just right.
Crossing the homecoming court, I’m dressed in darkness, and she lights up the night just as I promised. I escort her with unnerving grace. She’s my Beasty, I’m her Maleficent. My Beasty's beauty is radiant; she glistens and shines, shooting a smile that’s similar to mine.
