Then, me
A poem about a girl who chooses herself in the end

by Priscilla Kachipapa Phiri
I felt a presence,
Very heavy and intensely fixated on me.
Far, far away from where I stood.
I was glad,
So ironic for an extrovert.
I noticed goosebumps growing on my arms,
Coldness started to embrace me greatly.
The human figure was almost near me.
I promised not to look.
Who could that possibly be?
I swore to myself not to care.
So, I engulfed myself in the tune I was listening to.
“Hello, beautiful lady,” it spoke,
I carried my bags and off I went.
It ran towards me, aimlessly, breathing heavily.
Anger started to form clouds inside me.
I just wanted my personal space.
Never thought that was a crime.
“Hello, I am retired,” I responded with a goofy smile.
“I thought we all longed for love?” He asked, arms wide open.
Far and far, I went from him.
Not even a peep back.
Saddened or him and happy for me.
“There is no point anyway,” I mumbled to myself as we parted ways forever.
Strangers to remain till ever.
