THEN AND NOW
A POEM ABOUT THE PAST AND PRESENT
In this same street that day …
I lived with my affectionate father,
Caring mother, loving brother and
Clever grandma….!
Plenty of time we had
To play with our friends and
To listen to the stories of grandma
We sat in the building front
And chat gaily under the moon’s light.
When looked from the street’s end,
The scattered houses fascinate the mind
The gentle Breeze that touch the face
Brings the fragrance of paddy fields;
There the cranes look like
White Gems on a green carpet !
On foot we went to school
Crossing the field, bridge and
favorite banyan tree;
Never we left without swinging
With the lengthy aerials of the tree
Hurry and Haste never we felt
Sugar and BP never we had
Children then obeyed the parents
Younger chaps listened to the elders
The rays of the sun Scattered from
The transparent ponds of purity
The chipping birds flying in flocks
To get their food from fields and Greens
Had lightened the mind with more cheers
We earned little but more complacent
Colourful clouds in the dwindles
Yellow moon floating in the dark Sky
Smiling stars that looked at us
Kept us charged the whole of day.
Puppet shows and historic plays
Thought us values and morality of life.
Years passed… Years passed…
Technology grew… Technology grew…
Now
Mobile alarm wake me up
With laziness still in body and mind:
I came out to see the nature’s shade…
Tallar buildings stopped the sun's rays,
Concrete forests cleared the birds:
The noise of vehicles only I heard
With haste I ate my breakfast junk,
To catch the bus with laden footboard.
Mechanical work,
Worries on Economy,
Pressure in office and future anxiety
Managed me not in comfort !
Mobile calls and channels all
Harnessed me in their path.
Like a fish on land craves for water,
I travel in bus - laden dense.
Late to bed and late to raise!
Money is the lust and
Fame is the thirst!
My olden days creeped in mind…
One holiday I went up the building top…
But can't see the raising sun,
No Greens and chants of birds…
With disappointment I stepped down
In the world of Darkness again…
