Them Bones

First frost.

By Novel AllenPublished 11 months ago • 2 min read

Earth's bones felt the distal shift -it groaned mightily-

Who dares awaken me from my slumber, Earth bellowed.

A rumble from the depths of a mighty giant,

rudely disturbed - eyes opened to a lethargic knowing

Annoyed - lifting its head...sensing

something moved deep down where time first began

sniffing the air, earth crackled, settling deeper into itself

it recalls the pain of the chill deep within, where one cannot

reach down to soothe - way down within the roots of time

it groaned in anticipation of the agony of many months

of frozen hurt deep within its marrow.

As the first chill bit deep within its soul

it's skin crackled - prickled with unease

The Primeval Knowing had arrived

First Frost had made itself at home -

settling in for the long haul -

Stealth mode activated...

Earth roared anew - feeling the weight of mountains

archaic and primitive - it rumbled its preparation

strengthening its back

As silence fell like a woodsman's axe.

The rivers stiffened in-between flows,

and the trees, once riotous with flame,

stood stripped,

their fingers brittle with regrets of warmth.

Frost crept in on spider legs,

incising silver runes across the fields,

each blade of grass a frozen rapier,

each stone a clenched jaw.

The sun rose, pale and uncertain,

a ghost behind clouds of gauze,

its warmth a rumor, spoken now in whispers

no one dared to still believe.

And yet, beneath the crusted soil,

the seeds defied nature and dreamed in silence

of spring,

but first - the long sleep,

the sacred stillness

before becoming whole again.

I too, felt the chill enter my bones...

Warmth fleeing - waving a fond adieu

With a ghostly, playful childish whisper -

somewhere, a young one laughed happily.

Childhood innocence embracing wild, holy abandon.

But now...

comes that ominous shivering

The wind changing its tune -

a different melody tap-dancing on windows

If you listen keenly-

place your ear deep down to your soul

you will hear the autumn leaves crackle

First frost has stealthily approached

freezing them to their very bone-veined core

Somewhere a crow cawed a message

Birds chirped in reply - frost approaches

We are prepared...

The vision made visible.

First frost: cracked earth groaning, skeletal trees reaching skyward, silver runes etched across frozen fields, and golden seeds glowing beneath the soil.

Seeds dreaming in different seasons...

The frost whispering to our bones.
