Memories surface, their moments too brief.
What has happened to the world that I knew?
Lifelong we search for a path running true,
Time fast escaping, the prize of a thief,

Shuttered is the school where once children grew,
Absent from celebrations, dear lost Chief,
What has happened to the world that I knew?
Nation embattled, the lifeline withdrew,
Intellect questioned beyond disbelief,
Emotions and sky are both sometimes blue.
Families splintered, community untrue,
The splintered society yields no relief,
What has happened to the world that I knew?
Alas! sighs the empath, sensing deep rue
Of lives not well lived, lamenting, in grief.
