THE WORLD GOES BY

And time slips away

 ~~~~~~~~~
 “I’ll conquer the world”, the boy shouted out,
With his fists held high in their air.
He felt determined and fierce and ready to fight.
At the age of ten, there wasn’t a care.
The war came and scattered his all of his dreams
But, even in war, he fought.
When he finally came home, things weren’t the same,
And so, he sat and he thought.
“Okay, I just need to change some of the plans.
There’s still time to conquer the world.”
But he turned around, his heart skipped a beat:
When he saw the prettiest girl.
Conquer the world? It would just have to wait.
There were things more important in life.
When he wasn’t working, he spent the rest of his time
Convincing her she should be his wife.
“I’ll give you the world, just wait and see”
He said as his words formed a song.
Once again, time silently hurried away,
And soon, the babe came along.
He took whatever job came along
Just so he could make the ends meet.
Before long, he sighed but smiled once again
As he heard the patter of two sets of feet.
He sits on the couch watching the TV,
Yet, he’s as quiet as one lonely mouse.
The kids are all grown and live their own lives.
There is no longer a noise in the house.
His children don’t come to visit,
The grandchildren are too busy too.
I now sit beside him and grab hold of his hand,
And softly say, “Hon, it’s now just me and you.
