THE WOMAN INSIDE THE RED

I seen a woman inside the red,
With rivers running through her head,
Her face was white, her eyes were black,
She went inside and never came back.

The crimson walls began to bend,
No one could tell where they would end,
A milky road went curling through,
And swallowed everything she knew.

She followed thoughts without a name,
Some froze like ice, some burned like flame,
One wore the face of yesterday,
Then melted when she looked away.

A black hole opened in the wall,
She heard her younger self then call,
“I’m somewhere underneath your skin,
But you forgot to let me in.”

The woman tried to find the door,
But doors were dripping on the floor,
The ceiling rolled beneath her feet,
Her heartbeat ran along the street.

The red became a giant mouth,
The white road turned and travelled south,
The blackness grew a single eye,
And watched her memories walking by.

She caught one memory by its sleeve,
It said, “You mustn’t always grieve,
The mind makes monsters in the night,
Then paints around their teeth in white.”

At last she stepped outside the red,
But left her shadow there instead,
And now when darkness fills my head
I hear her walking through the red.
