Night is the cruelest historian.
She pulls dusty reels from forgotten shelves, threads them through the projector of my mind, and forces me to sit through every scene I have spent daylight after daylight trying to survive.
The mistakes, the betrayals... The words that should've stayed silent.
The words I never said at all.
I lie awake performing impossible surgery on my memory, stitching together alternate endings with trembling hands.
A thousand different versions of the same story march through my head, each one promising salvation if only I could step backward through time.
But time is a locked door. No matter how long I stare at it, it never opens.
So I watch the ghosts replay themselves. Again... Again... Again...
Every wound becomes fresh. Every failure becomes present tense.
I know, logically, that the past is beyond my reach. I know no amount of suffering can rewrite it.
Yet still my mind digs through old graves, searching for a heartbeat.
And in the darkness, the monsters arrive.
Not all of them wear familiar faces... Some wear mine.
Because the hardest truth is that the things that hurt me left teeth marks behind... I became sharp where I was cut. Cold where I was abandoned. Angry where I was broken.
There is a version of me born from every nightmare, standing just beneath my skin, restless and hungry.
Most people never meet her.
I have become an expert at hiding her. I smile. I laugh. I build a life around her cage... But I hear her pacing.
Every night... Waiting... Searching for a weakness in the lock.
And so each morning begins with the same battle.
Not against the world. Not against my past...
Against myself.
Against the woman grief created. Against the bitterness. Against the rage. Against the voice that says Become what hurt you.
It is a death I must die daily.
A sword lifted against my own reflection.
Some days I win elegantly. Some days I crawl from the battlefield covered in blood and exhaustion.
But I rise. Again.
Because there is another truth the darkness never tells.
The monster survives because I keep fighting her.
If I were truly her, there would be no war. The battle itself is proof that something better still lives within me.
So tonight, when the memories gather at my bedside, and the shadows wear my face, I will endure them.
I will mourn what happened. I will hate that it happened. I will wish, for a thousandth time, that I could change it.
But dawn will come... And when it does, I will pick up my sword once more, stand over the grave of who I refuse to become, and choose... again...
To be stronger than the darkness that made me.
There are nights when the sword feels heavy.
Nights when the exhaustion settles into my bones like wet cement, and I wonder how many more battles one soul can survive.
The memories do not come gently... They come like wolves.
Hungry and patient. Knowing exactly where the old wounds are buried.
They circle. They whisper... Remember this?
And suddenly I am there again.
Not in my bed or in the present...
But trapped inside a moment that ended years ago.
Feeling everything as if it is happening now.
The fear, the shame, the helplessness, and the grief...
As though time never moved at all.
I revisit every crossroads, every disaster, and every irreversible decision.
Searching desperately for a version of myself that knew better.
Who could have prevented it. Who could have saved everyone. Who could have saved me... But that woman does not exist. She never did.
She was just a human being walking through the darkness with a candle too small for the road ahead.
Yet I still punish her. Still hold her accountable for not possessing the wisdom that only suffering would later provide.
What a cruel thing to do.
To expect yesterday's self to carry tomorrow's knowledge.
And yet I do it every night. I put myself on trial...
The verdict always the same... Guilty.
Guilty of trusting, guilty of loving, guilty of breaking, and guilty of surviving incorrectly.
The sentence: Another sleepless night. Another replay. Another lap around a prison built entirely from memory.
And somewhere in the dark hours, I catch a glimpse of her again.
The woman beneath my skin. The one who forged from every betrayal... Every abandonment... Every moment I learned that softness was dangerous.
She watches me from the shadows. Arms crossed. Patient.
She knows exactly what I am capable of.
She knows the rage that I keep hidden...
She knows of the vengeance I never pursue.
The cruelty I could unleash if I stopped caring who I hurt.
She is not fiction... or a metaphor. She is me.
Or at least, she is what remains when pain is allowed to govern.
And some nights, if I am honest, I understand her.
Why she wants to stop forgiving... Why she wants to stop believing in people... Why she wants to stop hoping.
Hope has cost us so much.
But every morning, when the darkness loosens its grip, I bury her again.
Not because she deserves death. But because she cannot be allowed to drive. I carry her. I acknowledge her. I listen to her warnings...
But I refuse to become her...
Because if I become her, then every monster that ever touched my life wins.
Every wound wins. Every nightmare wins...
And I have not fought this hard, bled this much, survived this long just to surrender my humanity to the things that tried to destroy it.
So the war continues. Quietly. Daily. Invisible to almost everyone.
A thousand tiny choices. A thousand private victories. A thousand funerals for the person pain keeps trying to make me become.
Perhaps that is why sleep avoids me.
Because somewhere between midnight and dawn, I am not resting.
I am standing watch.
Guarding the fragile, scared parts of myself that somehow survived the fire.
Making sure they live long enough to see another sunrise.
