THE WISE DONKEY

There once was a donkey called Fred,
with more strange thoughts in his head,
he wore a big hat in the sun,
and thought being wise looked like fun.

He watched all the chickens go by,
then winked at a cloud in the sky,
I know why the rain always falls,
it’s washing the roofs and the walls.

The farmer said, Fred, you’re a fool,
you never once went into school.
Fred lifted his ears with a grin,
“Some wisdom just grows from within.”

He knew when the carrots were due,
and where all the cabbages grew,
he knew when the gate had been left,
and who was the vegetable thief.

He told all the pigs not to rush,
and warned every duck near the bush,
Life isn’t a race to be won,
sometimes you just sit in the sun.

He gave the old rooster advice,
Stop crowing, you’ve shouted out twice.
The rooster looked terribly cross,
Fred said, “Well, you’re not the big boss.”

He once told a horse feeling sad,
Tomorrow might not be so bad,
just eat a few apples and hay,
then kick all your worries away.

The farmer stood scratching his chin,
that donkey was starting to win,
for everything Fred seemed to say,
made sense in a ridiculous way.

So never judge wisdom by looks,
or think it belongs inside books,
sometimes it comes wearing a hat,
with two giant teeth and that’s that.

And Fred still sits watching the farm,
with wisdom, a grin and his charm,
he says, If you’re clever like me,
keep quiet and let people see.
