The Winds Came to Destroy

So frightening listening to it all in the dead of the night

The Winds Came to Destroy

The winds came howling through the night,
And gave us all an awful fright,
The tail end of a hurricane came,
And nothing outside looked quite the same.

Across Great Britain the wild winds blew,
And nobody knew what they would do,
They rattled the windows, they shook every door,
As leaves and branches covered the floor.

The dustbins went flying down the street,
While broken branches lay at our feet,
The garden plants were torn apart,
The sight of destruction broke many a heart.

The trees bent low, some fell to the ground,
As the winds made such a frightening sound,
The rain came lashing against every pane,
And nobody wanted this storm again.

I lay in my bed and tried to sleep,
But the howling winds made my poor heart leap,
Each time I closed my tired eyes,
Another great gust came as a surprise.

The rooftops rattled, the fences shook,
I was almost too frightened to go and look,
The darkness outside was a terrible sight,
As the hurricane’s tail swept through the night.

The streets were scattered with things blown away,
And everyone prayed for the break of day,
The wind showed no mercy as it tore through the land,
Leaving destruction by nature’s own hand.

Then came the floods as the waters rose,
And where they would stop, nobody knows,
The drains overflowed, the roads disappeared,
And more heavy rainfall was what people feared.

The morning arrived with a grey cloudy sky,
As the last of the storm went passing by,
The gardens were ruined, the streets were a mess,
And people stood looking in shock and distress.

But through all the damage, one thing remained,
The strength of the people who’d suffered and strained,
They helped one another to clear things away,
And hoped for a much more peaceful day.

For the winds came with destruction in their path,
Leaving behind the signs of their wrath,
And though they have gone, we’ll remember the night,
When the tail of a hurricane gave Britain a fright.
