The Wilted Rose
A Poem on Handling Disappointment
Disheartenment is overwhelming. A myriad of feelings washes over you. Anger. Embarrassment. Jealousy. Betrayal. And of course, hopelessness.
Disappointment washes over us when we do not meet expectations. We feel dejected when we invest our emotions in relationships or endeavours only to realise that the returns are not as significant as they should be. The sense of loss, of course, leads to moroseness.
A wilted rose
Broken spirit
Crumbled leaves drop one by one
Death catches up
Enveloping it in dusk
Fire in its petals gone
Growth curtailed, its goals unmet
Hard, dry soil yields no fruit
Icy water shrinks its roots
Jangled and rotten, so it should
Kindle its own stem with rays of kindness
Love its own petals with sane joyful sun
Moisten its own leaves with refreshing water
Nourish its own roots with quiet care
On its stamen, welcome the fly
Passage of time will bring it to life
Quiet reflection on how petals flopped
Rekindle roots with joyful thoughts
Stem stands once again
Thorns will rise sharp once more
Under its roots, when water flows
Vermillion rises in its petals
When the sun reappears
Xenith of growth it will reach again
Young buds of red will emerge
Zoom towards it with a flourish.
Zoom towards its rays it will.
