The Whisper

A Poem

Listen, listen, listen,

To the whisper only you can hear;

Ignore the tempting glisten,

And the soul crushing fear.

It never needs to shout,

Though many choose to go deaf,

For it is always out and about,

To be heard by those few left.

It calls, and calls, and calls,

A tinkle of breathy air,

In the silence between falls,

Of those who try not to care.

“You know the way ahead,

Even if others think you’re mad,

For there are worse fates than being dead,

Like mourning the life you could have had.”

Where, where, where,

Is this voice of aspiration?

From the aether of those who dare,

Or dreams and superstition?

There is no chance to know,

Beforehand what will come,

But don’t let it go,

And leave you forever numb.
