The Voice From The Grave

A Poem Inspired by the True Story of Teresita Basa

By parwinder singhPublished 3 months ago 2 min read

In Chicago's cold and silent night,

A woman lived with dreams so bright.

Teresita, gentle, kind, and wise,

Had hope reflected in her eyes.

She played the piano, soft and sweet,

Her life seemed calm, her days complete.

But fate had written a darker page,

A tragedy born from greed and rage.

One evening as the sun sank low,

A visitor came, a face she'd know.

A broken TV, a simple task,

Yet behind a smile lay a deadly mask.

The hours passed, the shadows grew,

And terror entered where trust once flew.

A cry unheard, a desperate fight,

Then silence swallowed the endless night.

Flames rose high from the apartment floor,

As if to hide what happened before.

A carpet burned, the smoke climbed high,

Carrying secrets into the sky.

The police searched, but found no trail,

Every clue and lead would fail.

Days became weeks, weeks became years,

Leaving behind unanswered tears.

But death itself would not erase

The memory of Teresita Basa's face.

For somewhere beyond the veil unseen,

Her restless spirit stirred between.

A doctor's wife, asleep one night,

Awoke possessed by a ghostly light.

A voice emerged, both strange and clear,

A message that all were meant to hear.

"My name is Teresita," the spirit cried,

"I know the man who watched me die.

He stole my jewels, he took my breath,

And left me wrapped in fire and death."

The listeners trembled, filled with dread,

Could the living hear the words of the dead?

Yet every clue the spirit gave

Led detectives closer to her grave.

The stolen jewels were found at last,

Pieces of a forgotten past.

The evidence grew, the puzzle aligned,

Though reason struggled to keep its mind.

The killer denied, the courts debated,

While justice stood and patiently waited.

Then suddenly guilt broke through the wall,

And truth answered the final call.

The murderer confessed his crime,

Unburdened by the weight of time.

At last the victim's soul could rest,

Knowing that justice had done its best.

So remember this tale when darkness falls,

And silence echoes through empty halls.

For some voices refuse to fade away,

No matter how deep beneath they lay.

And perhaps beyond what eyes can see,

Truth still fights to be set free.

For even death could not deprive

A brave young woman of her final drive.

Her voice rose softly from the grave,

To catch the man who thought he'd escaped.

A haunting tale, both strange and true—

A whisper from beyond that broke right through.
