The Umbrella That Followed You
Imagine never getting wet again

The Umbrella That Followed You
Someone invented an umbrella,
That followed you around,
It opened when the rain came down,
Without a single sound.
You didn’t have to hold the thing,
It floated overhead,
It followed every step you took,
And never got wet itself instead.
One day it followed someone home,
And waited by the door,
Then followed them into the house,
And followed them once more.
They told it, “You can go away,”
The umbrella stayed nearby,
It seemed to have developed thoughts,
And wouldn’t say goodbye.
They tried to leave it in the shed,
They locked it up at night,
But somehow in the morning,
It was waiting by the light.
Then one day the sun came out,
The sky was bright and blue,
The umbrella folded up itself,
And said, “I’ve things to do.”
It floated down the garden path,
And vanished round the bend,
Perhaps it found another person,
Who needed it as friend.
And somewhere when the rain falls hard,
Above a stranger’s head,
A little umbrella follows close,
And hears the words unsaid.
