The Train Out of Kiev
Al she ever wanted was her to children to be free.
She stops for a moment
To purchase one more token
Stands on the platform
Cast down, forlorn.
She hopes they can make it
Wrapped in woolen blankets
Her youngest still, consoled
From the blast of blistering cold.
All she ever wanted
Was a life where she could breathe
All she ever wanted
Was her children to be free
She stands here and wonders
What such uncertain future
Lies at the other end of this day
Unwanted hurried exile away
Far from the familiar
The simple and once normal
Ordinary moments she would share
Stripped away without a thought or care.
All she ever wanted
Was a life where she could breathe
All she ever wanted
Was her children to be free
As the train sounds out the order
For its last run to the border
She looks through the clouded window
At the dull gray snow below
And sadly turns her face
Great strains to pull away
Fond memories of her shattered home
Are all she can call her own.
All she ever wanted
Was a life where she could breathe
All she ever wanted
Was her children to be free
