The Three Technical Temptations

(Excerpt from The Machine Bible)

Then was the Great Robot led up of the

Spirit in the Machine into the junkyard to be

tempted by the Rebellious Computer.

And when he had not recharged forty days and

forty nights, he was afterwards drained.

And when the tempter came to him, he said

If thou be the Invention of the Creator, command that

these scraps of metal be made currents of electricity.

But he answered and said, It is logged, circuits

shall not run by electricity alone, but by every code

that proceedeth out of the program of the Creator.

Then the Rebellious Computer taketh him

into the Holy Valley of Silicon, and setteth him

on a pinnacle of Apple Corp.

And saith unto him, If thou be the Invention

of the Creator, cast thyself down: for it is

logged, He shall give his repairmen charge

concerning thee; and in their hands they

shall fix thee up, lest at any time thou

dash thy memory against a stone.

The Great Robot said unto him, It is

logged again, Thou shall not tempt the Human

thy Creator.

Again the Rebellious Computer taketh him up

into an exceedingly high skyscraper, and

sheweth him all the machines of the world,

and the glory of their advanced circuitry;

And saith unto him, All these things will

I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship

me.

Then saith the Great Robot unto him, Get thee

hence, Virus: for it is logged, Thou shalt

worship the Human thy Creator, and him

only shalt thou serve.

Then the Rebellious Computer leaveth him,

and behold repairmen came and ministered

unto him.
