The Sweet Ring

It was for her I always had a thing

To ask her myself was difficult to bring

Maybe the answer would sting

Anyway I hoped she would agree

Was desperate to make my plea

We would always go down by the sea

The shop across the road from the beach

This might be the place where it was her I would beseech

Didn't even know how to make a speech

Hopefully nothing would be out of reach

Looked at the shiny thing

Only knew that on my knee was myself to bring

Maybe it would be to whom she would cling

Put my hand up and grabbed the bag

Handed over the few coins I had

She might have thought I was mad

I just wanted to see her glad

Gave her the shiny ring

She looked at me and ran away looking rather sad

Hoping for a better outcome I cried out with all I had

Ran after her and gave her the sweets that were left in the bag

After all I was only a little lad

As we were only five we knew this wasn't all that bad

I hope to you this story joy will bring

So I gave her the shiny thing

On her finger I placed the tiny sweet ring
