THE SWAN AND THE AUTUMN LEAF
Floating on the changing seasons

THE SWAN AND THE AUTUMN LEAF
An autumn leaf floats down by a swan,
It saddens the bird, for summer has gone,
In disbelief, it looks at the leaf,
As it floats into October, bringing its grief.
The swan sits quietly upon the lake,
Watching the ripples the falling leaves make,
It remembers the sunshine, the warmth of the day,
And wonders why summer has drifted away.
The trees that once sheltered its beautiful nest,
Are changing their colours, preparing to rest,
Their leaves turning golden, then falling below,
As the winds of October begin to blow.
It watches a leaf as it floats out of sight,
Carried by waters reflecting the light,
And wonders if seasons can ever stand still,
Or must they keep changing against their own will?
The lake whispers softly, there’s nothing to fear,
For autumn returns at this time every year,
And though summer’s beauty has faded away,
October has treasures to brighten the day.
The swan lifts its head to the changing blue sky,
And watches the last of the swallows fly by,
It knows that the seasons are never the same,
Yet each has a beauty that carries its name.
No one can stop what the seasons must do,
The skies will turn grey after being so blue,
But winter has wonders and spring will arrive,
And summer will bring all the flowers alive.
So the swan watches autumn with different eyes,
As golden leaves dance beneath October skies,
For nothing stays forever, however we try,
Not even the clouds that go floating on by.
And somewhere beneath all the leaves that have fallen,
The earth hears the quiet of wintertime calling,
While the swan understands what it couldn’t before,
Each season brings beauty worth waiting for.
