A Peom

A young captured slave came,

To a Persian site of fame,

A glistening city of riches and game,

Of exotic debauchery without shame.

A novice scholar landed on an isle,

Off the Greek coast by a mile,

To reach in their schools for awhile,

And savour their empire’s guile.

A seasoned senator ambled in Rome,

For years he called the capital home,

Recording its faded memory in poem,

In Greek and Persian in his tome.

An old student hid in Cairo,

Watching the city swell and grow,

But all this grandeur will always go,

Like all the great cities he used to know.
