They came like charlatans with their wares
Arriving in the dead of night
And told us poor souls in the dark
That they had brought the saving light
Oh how they promised a gilded future
One we would build together
In this paradise, no storm
That we could not weather
Liberty and justice would flow abundant
Equality shall be yours and mine
If only we could rally hard
To get them over the finish line
No more hiding in the shadows
No longer will you have to cower
You come follow me
And I give you power
So get on the bus, the bandwagon
Hop aboard this train of change
We will work as one people
To be leaders in our new age
Such pageantry and fervent speeches
The parades they held were grand
We eagerly waved our flags and banners
And went off marching with the band
But behind our backs they grinned and whispered
For their lofty promises could not be kept
A hard-fought victory for the downtrodden
Would sadly not be ours to accept
And when we stopped and looked for them
They were no where to be seen
For they had abandoned us to find
Better hills with grasses green
When their con was over
In hindsight now we see
Blind to their true intentions
Taken for fools, all were we
Back-stabbed, lied to, and betrayed
Fury filled our hearts so strong
Emptiness echoed, deafening
Silenced was our song
The hopeless wail in the streets
As down the road, their taillights go
For they have left us standing here
With the status quo
