He lives in the box

Scratching from the inside

Voiceless beyond control

Only to distress in waves

Waves I cannot understand

A frequency unpleasant

If I turn the dials, then I may doom him

There a creature lives as well

Against its own will

Imprisoned between the metal and plastic

Wired motions and poor connection

The creature hisses prepared to constrict

The scratching angers it

And fast becomes too slow

Open ears to the noise

A word, taps specific to morse code

I hope for anything salvageable

For if he becomes ghostly

Then opportunity struck only down

The end nigh and inevitable

A decision agonizing

The dials are forced all the way left

Paralyzing quiet fills the room

Not a broken box

Not a broken man

But instead, a broken spirit to collapse

Self-inflicting torture I choose

As I hastily turn the device back on

I listen again, a tad closer

Scratch... hiss... scratch... hiss...

sad poetry
