The Stained-Glass Lantern

The stained-glass lantern greeted them warmly just after they wed.

"I made it for you with love," he said.

"It's beautiful! I'll surely cherish it until death.

The colors and shadows dancing take away my breath."

The lantern witnessed their lows and highs,

An ever vigilant, treasured prize.

Casting light on their young affection,

Feeling partially responsible for their protection.

Observing when, at times, tempers riled.

Glowing softly when they discovered they would be without child.

Illuminating many-a celebration,

Always proud for his creation.

Years later, sharing their tender caresses,

As he gently stroked her graying tresses.

Flaring in alarm as she discovered his body, cold and still.

Watching her join him with a bottle full of pills.

Having lost those who had his trust,

The lantern flickered out and turned to dust.
