The Weight of Distance

A distance

An emptiness that weighs

A nothing that hurts

A gap that wants to be crossed

Yet punishing the one that dares to traverse

The first one that reaches out

That stretches a finger,

Opens a heart

Says

I love you

I’m sorry

I want you

Let me touch you

A pop

A crack

A zap. A sting

Or an eruption. Explosion.

A crack unmendable between the two

Where the heart never reaches its destination.

The charge never easing.

The pain growing stronger

The hurt more powerful

The closer one object gets to the other.

The closeness leaves a rawness

A burn that is unseen

An impalpable scar that leaves, yet stays

It lingers

The heart remembers

It reaches out slower

More carefully

Waits

Hopes for a moment,

A person

A feeling of safety

The heart fails

It cannot accept it

that safety can only come after the touch

After the junction

A gap that isn’t crossed,

the other side remaining unknown

A safety never reached

A heart that persists in waiting

And staring at a space between

That lies forever empty
