THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE

9/9/2026 1130AM

The title is a cliche', a song of great repute even. But like all things, it means something different to each person. I love the song and the cliche' but it has a different meaning to me. It is that bandaid that i talk about that one rips off and the pain is there, but it doesn't heal. It will always be there. This is about my grandson.

There is a ranch

Where sound reigns during the day.

At night

The sounds stop when you approach.

Cricket silence it's called

With only the swishing sound of the giant ditch next to the house

Brushing against the ditch banks.

*

In a storm

The wind rages

Arguing with the snow about whom is more powerful,

So, it shrieks to prove itself

As it wrestles with the rains.

But in a forest

Amongst the trees it is respectful and demure in its speech

**

Out on the ocean,

A bastion of silence

Denies the quiet

As waves battle lunar winds slamming into/onto ships

Until, even they are exhausted.

Having vented

Even in silence the sea whispers a chanty.

***

A child sits hunched over

He plays with what he imagines with his stick and dirt

I've come to get him

But until I touch his shoulder

He is unaware

And still I wonder

At the sounds of silence.
