The Sound Between Ears

No one tells you

that elephants collect static.

It gathers

between great flapping ears,

in the wrinkles of old skin,

along the curve of ivory,

until every tiny hair

stands upright

like curious children

trying to hear

a secret.

Harold says

it isn't electricity.

"It's memories."

Every laughs

that was almost forgotten.

Every tear

that no one noticed.

Every brave thought

too frightened

to become words.

They drift through the world,

looking for somewhere

gentle

to land.

Sometimes,

when Harold walks

through tall grass,

the memories catch.

Crackle.

Fizz.

Whisper.

The air begins

telling stories.

Children think

the wind is playing.

Birds pretend

they don't believe him.

Even the trees

lean closer.

Harold simply smiles.

He knows

the world is full

of invisible conversations.

If you are very quiet...

and your heart

is listening...

you might hear them too.

Not as voices.

Not as noise.

But as the soft,

hopeful

static

between

one lonely soul...

and another

finding

its way home.
