The Song of the Flight
Towards the mirage of light
Between two boundaries
a captivating mirage
stuck between the steps of a ladder
there is no higher or lower
just an indefinite hurry
like a colorless haze
the sunset sleeps among the branches of the trees
the sunrise smiles on a field of blue flowers
and he thinks of the clear sky
wilted leaves carried by the wind
seem butterflies caught
in a ritual of mating
blown by the wind
I would bury myself
under these leaves
so that we become one
unless
a gust of wind takes us away
at least to teach us
the nobility of ascension
before collapse

Reaching Out
I promise her. I'd do anything for her. She's my mom. Even as Lanie and Deanna are flying home, Mom is scrappy fighting dying. She lays too still in that too-big bed with all the toasty white hospital blankets, in the south tower, at the broad end of a long slow-turning corner that delivers me again to her private room with the view she can't see through, with the beeping that tells us nothing new, and all these ice chips she can't swallow, and a flood of well-intentioned nurses who cannot do a damned thing all the same.
