The Solitary Surfer

We are just visitors in the ocean

The solitary surfer looked at each wave with glee

Watching the rise and fall of white on blue

Oblivious to anything that might be in the sea

I wonder if he would be there if he knew.

The solitary surfer rode the rising waves

Back and forth without a single care

Unaware of the danger lurking β€˜neath the waves

No one else but him riding waves out there.

πŸ„πŸ½β€β™‚οΈπŸ„πŸ½β€β™€οΈπŸ„πŸ½πŸ„πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ

Basking in his happiness and oblivious to all

The solitary surfer is out there all alone

He is so distracted, in the ocean he’s so small

Would he still have gone out, if he had known

πŸ„πŸ½β€β™‚οΈπŸ„πŸ½β€β™€οΈπŸ„πŸ½

The solitary surfer thought that he had it all

But he is a visitor; this sea is not his home

A victim to the owner, he would soon fall

To the lord of the ocean that calls the ocean home

πŸ„πŸ½β€β™‚οΈπŸ„πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ

No one saw what happened or how he disappeared

Just bits of a surfboard washed up to shore.Β

The sea once blue and bright

Now crimson and an eerie white

πŸ„πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ

He bobbed up one last time

But the solitary surfer lost his life in the sea

No more white waves would he ever climb

We forget we are just visitors in the sea.

[A/n:Β  This poem was inspired by a surfer who lost his life to a great shark attack last week in the northern suburbs of Perth.Β  The beautiful Blue Bay where I live (south of Perth) has been closed all week because of a 1- 2 metre shark. I have never seen a shark, and the beach has not been closed in the four years I have lived here. It is a stark reminder that we are just visitors in the ocean, and it does not belong to us.]

Till next time,

Calvin
