The silent room

Every little noise dissolved to nothing

The silent room

I entered a room that swallowed noise

Each word I tried to speak dissolved

The walls pressed closer with expectation

the ceiling dripped shadows onto the floor

Footsteps I did not take echoed anyway

A chair scraped across the floor with no one sitting

A wind rose from corners I had not noticed

Filling the room with breath I could not follow

I placed my hand on the cold plaster

It pulsed like a heart I did not know

Every object seemed alive and impatient

Waiting for the silence to confess itself

When I left, the door stayed open

the room exhaled a sigh of relief

I walked away feeling it had claimed something

A part of me that I would not name
