Ruby red lips and green eyes lined with flicks

colours abound, pavonine and proud.

A flick of her wrist as the feather fans twist

into a tail of bright eyes that mesmerise and hypnotise;

the art of the tease performed elegantly with ease.

She makes her vivid displays on the brightly lit stage,

reveals the flash of a thigh in the blink of an eye,

unveils a hand, from behind a strand

of kaleidoscopic diamonds that fringe a velvet blue glove.

But, don’t mistake this for courtship don’t be cajoled into love.

This is not a male peafowl out on the prowl;

her strut is so bold, because she knows no man can hold

her crystal plumage in their hands.

The aim of her game is to be free from timid and tame,

to liberate and emancipate only herself.

She stands in her own power as the peacocks look on.
