The Shoplifter Oh No I know him

He used to smile, nod hello,

a neighbour’s warmth, a happy glow.

But now he stands with trembling hands,

caught red-handed cuffs on his hands.

A bottle tucked beneath his coat,

a cut of steak, a crust to gloat.

Was it greed or was it need?

A moment’s act, a planted seed.

The beeping gates, the flashing light,

the startled gasp, the grip too tight.

The guard steps in, no place to run,

the game is up, the deed is done.

The whispers spread, the verdict clear,

no mercy found, no friendly ear.

A life undone for a stolen prize,

a thief forever named by judging eyes.
