Saving Grace

The blue waters bubble around me

As I dip once more beneath the waves

Like a sleek dolphin cutting through the ocean highway

Then atop once more to breathe.

***

My mind running ten miles per minute

Without any order or repartee

Just a vague clamber for survival

And to wonder if anyone will save me.

***

Brightly coloured fish swim around me

Visions of friends from my misspent youth

Ghostly images of my long-lost family

Easing my passage and calling to me.

***

My journeys to the surface become less frequent

‘Person Overboard’

I fancy I hear

A ring of life splashes beside me

Before I sink beneath the depths once again.

***

Sometime later I awake upon the deck

To a scene of people working feverishly

Is it real, or the next stage of my journey?

I fancy alive I still may be.

***

This time I survived but almost not

A remembrance of how fragile we are

How grateful I am for their saving Grace

How glad I am to be me.
