The Room I Grew Up In

Loneliness was a companion of mine

I grew up in a room with walls painted green

Walls that could trap you inside

Walls that called your name and invited you to stay

They provided support

They provided safety,

It was comfortable between those four walls

But they also provided silence

Silence from the outside

Silence from the screams

Of my own life

I grew up in a room with walls painted green

They hid a demon

That lived under my bed

And when silence came

He would lurk

Looming…

Taking up space

Until he couldn’t anymore

I grew up in a room with walls painted green

That was silent when no one was around

When everyone was gone

…

…

…

And I,

I never really existed in that room
