The return
He returned one day, and brought back what he promised to give them
He was a pilot.
_
An acclaimed one.
_
He knew his job.
_
He takes passengers
_
From one place,
_
To the other.
_
He had a wife.
_
3 Sons.
_
And a pet pig.
_
He had promised,
_
He had promised to return -
_
Fully -
_
When he’ll be 50.
_
At that age,
_
He’d have his last flight.
_
”All aboard,”
_
He said,
_
”Today would be my last flight.
_
See,
_
I had promised
_
My kids
_
That I will return the day
_
I turn 50.
_
I promised to
_
Bring them something
_
When I return.
_
And now -
_
Now‘s my birthday…
_
So,
_
Enjoy your flight.”
_
People have tried to come and
_
Reach him,
_
To tell him about their stories.
_
Of drowning and work
_
Without being with their kids,
_
And how dearly this miss them.
_
How deeply their regret is,
_
Stained in their DNA.
_
How he should run and hug
_
His kids - how old are they?
_
In their 20’s?
_
And what’s that thing you
_
Promised to give them?
_
”The oldest - 20,
_
Then the middle one - 15,
_
And the youngest- well, he’s 11.
_
And what I promised
_
to give them -
_
Is for their eye, only…”
_
”Oh, late fatherhood, is it?
_
And - ok, understood.
_
Don’t tell us.“ They blinked.
_
(Whatever for God knows.)
_
“Go, go and hug them!
_
Give them a proper surprise!”
_
He returned,
_
And gave them
_
That old postcard
_
With the photo
_
Of the plane that they liked,
_
With greetings on its’
_
Back,
_
From when Liam was 10, Don
_
Was 5, and Bob was 1 year old.
_
On it,
_
A drawing of them on
_
adventures
_
And a list of plans,
_
Plus the words,
_
”I’ll be back…”
