The Pushover

We love them, hate them, use them, abuse them. The only thing we don't do is see them as human.

The Pushover. Where do I start with the pushover?

Small, weak… easily pushed through, smoothed over, stamped out.

They never complain, the pushover.

Come one and all, jump on the bandwagon!

They’re your ticket to easy street,

To hog heaven,

Fat city,

The Elysium.

Keep this person by your side because they will be your four-leafed clover.

-

Nobody looks too deeply into the pushover.

What makes them tick.

Why they behave the way they do,

How far you’d have to push them to make them sick.

It’s not cruel, you say.

Doesn’t it seem like they’re asking for it? You debate.

It’s a dog-eat-dog world, you shout. It’s not your fault that they’re too feeble to walk away.

I guess it takes shirking the responsibility of your own actions to make you feel okay.

-

We don’t speak about the restraint of the pushover.

Their calming presence, their understanding nature.

The strength behind their compassion,

The maturity behind their compromises,

The passion they have for life, the way they take everything in their stride.

How they seem to see straight through us,

How they can tell when we’re living a lie.

-

The Pushover. Where do I start with the pushover?

The pushover is an abstract concept, they are all things at once.

Both yin and yang,

Both what we wish to see more of in the world and what we do not.

The pushover is complex.

They are everything we hate about ourselves, yet everything we love,

We spurn them, cherish them, punish them, long for them.

Even when we outwardly despise them, we can’t wait to see them again.

The only thing we don’t do is respect them as a fellow human.

-

So come one and all, jump on the bandwagon!

Let go of your inhibitions and enter a world of love and compassion,

A symphony crafted by an expert composer.

Keep this person by your side because they will be your four-leafed clover.
