The Prospector

“Money is numbers and numbers never end. If it takes money to be happy, your search for happiness will never end.” Bob Marley

“Just a little more and I’ll soon be content,

A little more and I’ll achieve my dream.”

The prospector muttered under his breath,

As he looked at the gold veins with greed.

It seemed to get purer the further he went,

Digging hard and so vigorously.

But the deeper he dug the further he sank,

Into the catacombs of insanity.

“I must get my fill and take my true place,

I will surely live like a king.”

But little did he know that the tunnel he made,

Would be his pitfall into misery.

He thought of the life he’d been living,

Full of hunger and poverty.

All the while he continued digging,

Not knowing that he’d never leave.

“They laughed at the rags I wore,

The sneered at the holes in my shoes.

I watched as they feasted so greatly,

Taking scraps from their leftover food.”

“They’ll soon regret all that they call me,

They’ll soon come to me and plead.

And I’ll laugh at as they ask me for mercy,

Yes, to me they’ll come on their knees.”

In that moment he heard a small voice,

Coming deep from within the cave.

It sounded much like a whisper,

Saying “don’t do it, just run away.”

The prospector paused from his labor,

Puzzled and stricken with surprise.

But muttered to himself, “it must be the wind”

And thus he paid it no mind.

But the voice returned even louder,

And it sent a deep chill down his spine.

Saying “flee or you’ll be lost here forever,”

But again he shrugged, blaming it on the wine.

He continued to dig ever deeper,

And he post all remembrance of day.

But taking his pick and his shovel,

He dug ever deeper his grave.

“Just a little bit more and I’ll soon be content,

A little more and I’ll achieve my dream.”

The prospector muttered under his breath,

As he continued digging so ferociously.

When suddenly the earth started trembling,

Sealing the prospectors fate.

Collapsing the tunnel of riches,

Surrounding him ina vast golden grave.

I leave you now with this warning,

Dear reader don’t make this mistake.

Of trading your life for the riches

That dug this prospectors grave.

Don’t search for the wealth you’ve been holding,

For indeed it lies all around.

Whether family or friends, or the air that you breathe.

True wealth comes not from the ground…
