The Poet at Six

Teachers would say Sone was quite intelligent,

and loud, and when they would hug—

at the beginning and end of each day—

they held on very tight.

Their favorite type of hug was the ankle grab:

Sone would wrap around their teacher’s leg as

Mrs. Lynch would walk around. Sone’s mom would ask

you’re not concerned she’s always spacing out?

Sone was easily distracted—or focused on other things,

very profound thoughts only special Sone would think.

They wrote about shells, flying dogs, and dancing trees,

they imagined having wings or some flying capabilities.

They didn’t have a favorite color—it was so hard to choose!

From purple to blue and orange to green,

Sone didn’t want to leave any colors out—

they didn’t want to be mean.

Sone’s mom would say they’re on Planet Sonia many times a day.

Sone quite enjoys this state—it feels natural and safe.
