The Pit Brow Lasses
They worked equal to the men, and kept house when they got home

The Pit Brow Lasses
Down in the dark where the black dust swirls,
Toiling like men, the pit brow girls.
Faces streaked with sweat and grime,
Breaking coal and beating time.
No silken gowns, no dainty hands,
Just boots and grit and iron stands.
Their scarves tied tight, their backs unbowed,
Their voices strong, their laughter loud.
They shovel, they sort, they heave, they haul,
Shoulder to shoulder, standing tall.
Through choking dust and furnace heat,
They earn their wage, they keep their feet.
The gaffers scoff, the men protest,
But none can match their stubborn zest.
With pride they work, with pride they fight,
Daughters of coal, hearts burning bright.
Though history hides their toil away,
Their strength still echoes to this day.
For those who carved their place in stone,
The pit brow lasses—strong, unsown.
