The Perfect Picture
The trials and tribulations to obtain the perfect shot
On 18 April 1995
A beautiful baby boy was birthed,
You only had to hold him to know
He was special from the first,
In what way, we would not discover
Until many years were traversed.
***
We lived and loved throughout the years
Moving through baby and toddler stages,
Noting on a daily basis how
His specialness grows and changes,
Some days more, some days less
Up and down throughout the phases.
***
We come upon the teenage years
And the hormones they ran rampant,
Even then it was clear to all, far and wide
His specialness had not been dampened,
And during these years we decided
His rare gift should be pampered.
***
School is over and done with
He can’t decide on a suitable career,
He took whatever work was around
And just lived from year to year,
We knew he was destined for greatness
But in what way was not yet clear.
***
When he was 25 years of age
He discovered a new ambition,
To photograph and record
Life and mother nature’s condition,
To document the daily changes
As life around us continues to transition.
***
Thousands and thousands of pictures
To sharpen up his skill,
Trying different techniques
Different lighting and angles, until
The perfect picture was taken
Of a python laying coiled and still.
***
So the trials and tribulations
Taken to achieve this perfect shot,
Was to grow a human being
From seed to 25 years of age, not
A quick and simple plan
Took patience and years to plot.
***
So I hope you enjoy the simple pleasure
Of viewing a snake coiled and waiting,
26 years of hard work and timing
Went into the magic and creating,
To be in the exact time and place
To make this whole process amazing.

About the Creator
Colleen Millsteed
My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
