You set it down for later

thinking it will be the same when you have the courage to face it.

But the past collects interest

and when it returns, it's all the greater.

Like an eagle beset by sparrows

it gathers more the longer it flies

in territory not uncommon

but not its usual skies.

In time, all graves are unburied

all secrets are laid to bare

that which was forgotten

will come looking for an heir.

The past does not forget

nor does it right its sins

it will come to collect every debt

and the past always wins.
