“The One in the Grey Shirt”
(A poem for the challenge-Don't Turn Around)

“The One in the Grey Shirt”
(A poem for the challenge — spooky, literal, unseen)
I felt it before I saw it
that soft pull of air
like someone stepping into my breath.
The bracelet slid from my wrist
without touching my skin,
as if an invisible hand
had unhooked me from myself.
I froze.
The kitchen light hummed.
The room held its breath.
And there,
just at the edge of vision
a faint shape,
a shoulder,
a grey shirt
leaning where no one stood.
I didn’t turn around.
I couldn’t.
The air behind me thickened
like someone deciding
whether to speak.
Later, in the dark,
the bed dipped beside me
a weight,
a presence,
a quiet settling
as if someone had sat down
to watch me sleep.
I kept my eyes closed.
Sometimes the unseen
is louder than the living.
And at night,
the candle blows out
with no breath but mine in the room.
A soft exhale.
A warning.
A whisper.
A reminder
that something in a grey shirt
still stands just behind me,
waiting for me
to turn around.
