The Odd Job Man
The odd job man came to my door.
I’d never seen his face before.
He said he’d come to fix a wall.
But something didn’t feel right at all.
He carried tools inside his bag.
Some looked old and some looked cracked.
He looked around my quiet home.
Then asked me if I lived alone.
He started working on the floor.
Then walked towards the bedroom door.
I asked him what he wanted there.
He said that something wasn’t clear.
He looked around and then he smiled.
He said the house had been here a while.
He told me strange things happened there.
Then looked behind the empty chair.
He stopped and listened to a sound.
I couldn’t hear it all around.
He said, “There’s someone in this place.”
Then looked at me with a serious face.
He packed his tools and said goodbye.
I watched him leave and wondered why.
He hadn’t fixed the broken wall.
He’d spent his time just looking all.
That night I heard a knocking sound.
It seemed to come from underground.
I heard three knocks and then three more.
Then heard a voice outside my door.
I looked outside but no one stood.
The odd job man was gone for good.
But sitting by my garden gate.
His old toolbox was left to wait.
